Oil Surge and Global Tensions Drag Sensex and Nifty
Indian stock markets had a rough start today. The Sensex Nifty fell over 400 points and slipped below the 24,300 mark, as investors stayed cautious because of ongoing tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices.
By midday, the Sensex was trading around 77,600, down close to half a percent from its previous close. The Nifty wasn’t doing much better, sliding below the key psychological level that traders usually watch closely. Market breadth stayed weak too, with way more stocks falling than rising throughout the day.
Moreover, what’s actually driving this drop? A big part of it comes from crude oil prices, which have climbed to around $88 to $89 a barrel. That’s happening because of concerns about reduced shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. It’s an important route for oil tankers, as tensions between the US and Iran continue without clear resolution in sight. When oil prices rise, it usually makes investors nervous, since higher costs can hurt profits and push up inflation.
On top of the oil situation, a weaker rupee and some selling pressure in IT and banking stocks added more weight to the overall market today. This actually marks the second straight day of losses for Indian markets, showing that investors are staying pretty cautious for now.
Analysts say a lot of this will depend on how the Middle East situation develops in the coming days. Until there’s more clarity, markets are likely to stay a bit shaky.
